3 Hole Press is a small press I started in 2016 in collaboration with graphic designer Alice Chung. Mary Marge Locker came on around 2018 or so as the press’s “step dad” and we’ve since grown. Here is our mission statement:

3 Hole Press is a home for performance in book form and everyday life. We publish titles that expand our notions of plays, scripts, and scores, how we engage with them, and how we distribute them. We view publishing as a step towards making contemporary performance more accessible, and celebrate performance created for a reader. Through publication, commissioned reflections and live events, the Press creates a route for artists working in and around performance to have their work shared in the context of a wider cultural conversation.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

  •  3 Hole Press reasserts the importance of performed works as literature. More than ever, a polyphony of voices needs to be amplified, a diversity of stories needs to be distributed and told. 3 Hole Press confronts these problems head-on. —ERIK FREER, THE BROOKLYN RAIL

  •  A publisher of independent theater works that is quickly becoming the gold standard in contemporary American performance-text publicationJEREMY O. HARRIS, ARTFORUM

  •  While a dance, like a life, must end, it’s nice, when it’s over, to have something to hold in your hands.SIOBHAN BURKE, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Our books have won Obie Awards, been highlighted in BOMB Magazine, and are taught in playwriting and performance classrooms around the country. In 2021, Cooking as Though you Might Cook Again was selected by the New Yorker as one of the best cookbooks of the year. The enthusiasm from our readers keeps this labor of love alive.
